Weather review - October 2014

Apart from the remnants of hurricane Gonzalo passing over the country on the 21st, creating a record wind gust for October, the month was decidedly average. Temperatures were slightly above average and rainfall amounts were exactly on average for the month. The maximum temperature in October was 19.1°C at 16:10 on the 3rd, with the minimum temperature being 2.8°C on the 12th at 08:02. This minimum is the lowest temperature since May 3rd when the thermometer fell to 0.6°C. Cold front signals return to normal temperatures

Throughout September, the weather in the British Isles was dominated by high pressure and a jet stream situated to the north of the islands. The jet stream’s position blocked the colder air from the Arctic from sinking over the country keeping the temperature several degrees above normal. September’s average temperature was 0.7°C above normal, and this continued over the first three days of October, which also had temperatures above normal. First and last frost days

With winter approaching, now is the proper time to take a look at when frost has arrived at Bracken House since records began in October 2009. There are two types of frosts that are mentioned in weather forecasts, air frost and ground frost. An air frost is when the temperature at a height of about four feet from the ground level falls below 0°C. A ground frost is when the temperature at ground level reaches 0°C.
