Meteorologically, Autumn started on October 1st, and since then, there has been a steady flow of south-westerly winds bringing Atlantic low pressure systems, and heavy rain, over the British Isles. The rainfall amounts have been so high that, by the 15th of the month, October 2013 had become the wettest October ever recorded at Bracken House, as well as the wettest month of 2013 so far.
After almost 17 millimetres of rain fell in the first four days, a drier spell followed which saw only 1.2 millimetres fall in the next six days. Since the 11th, weather fronts laden with moisture have been piling in from the west bringing almost daily downpours.
The Summer brought below average rainfall to Bracken House, leaving the land dry and hard, but the recent rains have seen puddles re-appear in the fields, which are turning to mud in the most used areas.
On the 21st October, 16.0 millimetres of rainfall was recorded, making it the second wettest day of 2013, beaten only by the 32.4 millimetre downpour on July 23rd. The month’s total currents sits at 77.4 millimetres, and with nine days of the month remaining, and more rain forecast, there is every chance that the final total will be over 100 millimetres.
The only positive from this sodden month is that the temperature has been well above average at around 12.0°C, compared to the October mean temperature of 10.6°C.
