Today I was finally able to do some work in the garden when I continued cutting the meadows, a job I started in mid-November. There has been so much rain for the last few weeks that the ground has been too waterlogged to work.
This year, I have decided to spread the cuttings from the wildflower meadows onto the muddy and bare patches in the grazing fields. The idea behind this is to fill in some of the hoof prints as the cuttings rot down, and also to allow some of the seeds that are in the cuttings to germinate in the fields and fill the bare patches. Time will tell if this is a success.
In the garden, primroses are already in bud and the gorse is in flower in places. The holly in the hedgerows looks great with the glossy dark green leaves showing up well against the bare hawthorn branches. The honeysuckle has also started to break into leaf in the more sheltered spots.
In the flower borders, one of the climbing plants has started to flower next to the patio area, and the daffodils are already a couple of inches high.
With the temperatures more like April than January, are we in for an early Spring in 2013?
