Today, I took delivery of a Triggertrap device and a cable to connect my iPhone to my Sony a77 camera. Once connected, the iPhone can control the camera using the Triggertrap Mobile application, available on the iTunes store.

The iPhone application has the following features:

  • Cable release – press button, take picture
  • Bang – clap, whistle or tap
  • Timelapse – travel through time
  • TimeWarp – timelapse with acceleration
  • DistanceLapse – perfect for road trips
  • Seismic – vibrations and earthquakes
  • Peekaboo – facial recognition
  • Star Trail -extreme exposure control
  • LE HDR – long exposure HDR sets
  • LE HDR Timelapse – long exposure HDR timelapse
  • Tesla – magnets and metal, oh my!
  • Motion – detect movement
  • Bramping – bulb ramping timelapse
  • Wi-fi Slave – trigger remotely

You can also control the shutter and the focus from within the application, as well as controlling and using the iPhone camera.

I brought the device from UK Highland Photography for £24.50, including the cable to connect the Triggertrap with my Sony camera. The application is currently free on the iTunes store. An Android version, with less features, is also available.

So, what do I intend using the device for? I have always been fascinated with timelapse photography, so I will definitely be creating some videos. I will also use the device for astronomy photography and motion detection, snapping birds on the feeders, for example. I’m sure I will think of lots of other uses once I start playing with the device.

I also ordered a wireless infrared remote control for my camera so that I can position the camera and release the trigger from a distance. Ideal for snapping feeding birds.

I am looking forward to playing with the device once the weather improves and I will post my efforts on YouTube, Flickr and Facebook.
